Google brings iPhone 5's Big Screen Support for iOS to Gmail

This isn't exactly the launch of Google Maps for iOS, but Google just updated Gmail for iOS, which now supports the iPhone 5's elongated 4-inch display. Instead of seeing black bars at the top and bottom of the app, iPhone 5 users will now be able to see a bit more of their inboxes on their phones now.

Gmail is obviously an application that greatly benefits from the extra screen estate. Nevertheless, it took Google a while to update the app, even though the company had already released updates for both its Chrome browser and Google Drive. It's worth noting, though, that the Gmail app had a few other issues on iOS 6, the only version of iOS that runs on the iPhone 5. Google probably wanted to fix these bugs before releasing this new version.

When Google first launched Gmail for iOS, the launch was somewhat of a disaster, as the app didn't actually work. Since then, though, Google has offered regular updates and slowly added a few more features to the app, including, for example, the ability to open links in Chrome for iOS. What's still missing, though, is support for multiple accounts, something users have been asking for ever since the app first launched.

Sparrow, the popular iOS email client that Google acquired in July, has officially been put into maintenance mode. And even though the app won't get any major feature updates, the developer recently said it will be updated to include support for the iPhone 5's larger screen.

If you use Gmail on the iPhone but prefer Apple's own mail app, by the way, also take a look at yesterday's announcement regarding Google's support for CardDAV, which now makes it a lot easier to sync your Google Contacts with Apple's native iOS Contacts app.

Facebook launches service to send real-life gifts to Friends

Facebook is rolling out a service called Gifts which, as its name suggests, lets users send chocolate, coffee, socks and other real-life presents to one another.

Facebook Gifts launched Thursday to a subset of users in the U.S. and will roll out to more over the coming months as people begin to send gifts to each other.

Users will be able to click on a "gifts" icon on their Facebook friends' pages on Facebook's website or on Android mobile phones. (iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon.)

The icon will also show up on the right side of users' Facebook pages with the notifications for friends' birthdays, weddings and other life events. For example, if your friend's birthday is coming up in two days, you'll now see a "give her a gift" link and the gift icon next to her name and photo.

Clicking the icon will display presents you can buy, such as a Starbucks gift card, cupcakes or a teddy bear.

The recipient will be notified through Facebook to enter a shipping address for the presents. In some cases, they'll be able to select their own cupcake flavors or size and style of socks. They can also exchange gifts for other items if they don't like chocolate or don't wear socks.

The move represents Facebook Inc.'s first real foray into e-commerce. The company will take an unspecified cut from each item sold. On Thursday, possible gifts included gourmet ice cream, Andy Warhol prints, flowers, organic dog toys and spa packages.

Facebook Gifts is the result of Facebook's acquisition of Karma, a 16-person startup based in San Francisco. Facebook bought the company on May 18, the day of its rocky initial public offering. Karma's mobile app let people send gifts to their friends on the go. Facebook Gifts, of course, works both on computers and mobile devices.

Lee Linden, the former head of Karma, is now head product manager for Facebook Gifts, which he says incorporates "the heart and soul of the Karma experience."

"We think gifting is a form of communication," he said.

Google Engineer Develops Tool for Generating RSS Feeds from Google Plus

Google Plus does not offer RSS Feeds but you can easily generate feeds on your own using a new Chrome app developed by Eric Koleda, an engineer working with the Google Apps Script team. Here's a sample Google+ Feed create using this tool.

How to create RSS feeds -

To get started, open Feed+ inside Chrome and it will request access to some of your Google services. Say yes and you are all set to create RSS feeds from Google Plus. You can generate RSS feeds for individual profiles, business pages and for search results on Google Plus.

The generated RSS feeds are public and thus you, or anyone else, can subscribe to these feeds in any news reader. FeedBurner, for some reason, does not recognize these feeds as valid though I could easily subscribe to them in Google Reader.

And now that you have an RSS Feed for your Google Plus profile, you can easily cross-post updates to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn and everywhere else using the IFTTT service.

If you are to ever disable a particular Google Plus feed, simple delete it from the Feed+ app inside Chrome. Also, you only need the Chrome app for managing the feeds – the Google Plus to RSS conversion happens in the cloud.

Google Plus APIs do not include details about Circles else it would have been more convenient to have a single RSS feed per Google+ circle rather than having to generate separate feeds for every member of a circle.

Google plan to Shut China Music Download Service next month

Google Inc said today, it will close a once-feted music download service in China from next month due to a disappointing response from users.

The move announced Friday will further reduce Google's presence in the world's most populous Internet market two years after it closed its mainland search engine in a dispute over censorship and computer hacking.

Google launched the music site in 2009 as a legal alternative to Chinese pirate websites. It shared advertising revenue with music companies.

Google Music Search users will be able to use and download their stored playlists until the service closes on October 19, Google said.

"The impact of this product was not as high as we expected, so we decided to divert our resources to other products," Yang Wenluo, Google China's engineering research general manager, wrote on Google China's blog.

HTC to launches Two Smartphones Windows Phone 8X and 8S in November

HTC has announced to launch there two new smartphones based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 OS called - the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S and it would be available in November through more than 150 service providers in over 50 countries globally.

HTC Windows Phone 8X

Windows Phone 8X has a 4.3-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD display and is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor Snapdragon S4 processor. It comes with a 8MP auto focus camera at the back with LED flash, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, 1,800 mAh battery, BSI sensor and 2.1MP front-facing camera with 1080p HD video recording. 

HTC Windows Phone 8S

Windows Phone 8S has a 4-inch (800 x 480 pixels) super LCD display and is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor Snapdragon S4 processor. It comes with a 5MP auto focus camera at the back with LED flash, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal memory, 1,700 mAh battery, and 2.1MP front-facing camera with 720p HD video recording. 

HTC is shipping Beats Audio support on both of its Windows Phone 8 handsets, with an extra amplifier for audio out on the 8X to power larger headphones in the Beats range without distortion. ZTE to Launch Mozilla Mobile OS based Smartphones

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp. plans to launch smartphones using a mobile operating system it developed with Mozilla, the U.S. software company behind the Firefox web browser, in the first quarter of next year.

The move is the latest indication that handset makers are looking beyond Google Inc.'s dominant Android mobile operating system as they try to diversify the software platforms for their smartphones and other mobile devices. While Apple Inc.'s iPhone uses its own iOS software, most other smartphones currently sold around the world are powered by Android.

ZTE Executive Vice President He Shiyou said at a press briefing Wednesday that the company, one of China's largest mobile handset makers, will also launch smartphones using Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone 8 operating system at the end of this year or early next year.

Along with Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, the new mobile operating system from Mozilla and ZTE will fuel discussions world-wide about possible alternatives to Android. Potential alternatives are drawing more attention as the technology industry is closely watching Apple's patent war against rival smartphone makers using the Google software.

ZTE's smartphone launch plans also come after Taiwanese personal computer maker Acer Inc. last week postponed its release in China of a new smartphone using Alibaba Group Holding's Aliyun mobile operating system, after Google objected to the phone's launch.

Google said Alibaba's Aliyun "was derived from Android" yet it isn't compatible with Android. Acer, a handset maker that is part of the Android ecosystem, isn't allowed to ship non-compatible Android devices, Google said. Alibaba, China's biggest e-commerce company, strongly disagreed with Google's view, saying that some of Aliyun's key software components were developed by Alibaba and are different from those used in Android.

According to market research firm IDC, 68.1% of smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter used Android, while 16.9% were Apple products running on iOS. Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system accounted for only 3.5%.

ZTE, whose main business is providing telecommunications infrastructure and equipment, entered the mobile handset business in 2002. ZTE accounted for 5.2% of all the smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter, up sharply from 1.8% a year earlier, according to IDC, ranking the company fifth after Samsung Electronics Co., Apple, Nokia Corp. and HTC Corp. of Taiwan.

Intel Powered Smartphone - Motorola RAZR i announced

Google-owned Motorola Mobility with Intel officially announced it's first smartphone - Motorola Razr i - with an Intel processor at an event in London. The Razr i looks similar features as a the Razr M including a edge-to-edge 4.3-inch (960 x 540 pixels) Super AMOLED Advanced display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection but it is powered by a 2GHz single-core Intel processor instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. Twitter Redecorate apps brings new features expanded content, adds header photos and more

Twitter on Tuesday unveiled a series of design updates, a new app for the iPad and new versions of the application for other mobile devices that dropped support for third-party image hosting.

"Starting today you can make your presence on Twitter more meaningful with new Twitter profiles," the company blog said.

"Upload an all-new header photo on mobile apps for iPad, iPhone and Android or twitter.com, and the same image will appear whenever anyone views your profile on the web or these apps. You can upload your header photo, which appears above your Tweets, to express yourself instantly, anywhere."

Twitter's Jaikumar Ramanathan said one of the features is improved photo sharing.

"Photo streams for profiles display the images people have shared on Twitter," he wrote.

"Whenever you see a photo stream, swipe left or right through the thumbnails or tap to view photos in fullscreen mode. Android users can also get closer to photos with pinch-to-zoom."

As expected, Twitter apps for iOS and Android have removed the option to upload images to third-party sites like TwitPic. Uploading videos to third-party services is still supported.

Twitter, which allows its members to post brief comments, links or pictures, claims to have more than 140 million active users, with the largest number being in the United States.

A recent survey found one in seven Americans who go online use Twitter and eight percent do so every day.

MTS to launch CDMA with GSM Dual Technology Smartphone Soon

Telecom service provider Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), which offers its mobile services under the brand name MTS, announce today, that it will launch handsets supporting CDMA as well as GSM connections next month.

"We will launch multimode phones from October. It will be CDMA with GSM smartpone in the price range of Rs.6,000 to Rs.12,000," Lenny Musatov, chief marketing and sales officer, said on sidelines CDG International Roaming Team meet.

"We are regularly working with carriers (service providers) to provide international roaming facility to CDMA users. Through multi-mode handsets (phones supporting multiple technnology like CDMA and GSM), we are trying to provide international roaming facility in where there is no CDMA network," CDG Chairman Federico Nienstadt said. 

The firm has 1.7 million data subscribers at the end of June 2012. Out of the overall revenues, MTS gets about 26 per cent of its revenues from data services. CDMA technology has around 15 per cent market share in global mobile phone market.

Samsung plans to unveil new Galaxy S4 in February 2013 at MWC

After the success of Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, "Samsung plans to launch another Galaxy series S4 handset at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on February, 2013." Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer gives employees to top Smartphones for work

India's Government plans to develop Fastest Supercomputer by 2017

The government has drawn a blueprint for developing the next generation of supercomputers that could be 61 times faster than existing machines.

Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal is understood to have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sharing the roadmap to develop "petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers" at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore over 5 years.

"In his (Sibal) letter, he has said that C-DAC has developed a proposal with a roadmap to develop a petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers in the country with an outlay of Rs 4,700 crore," a government official said.

A petaflop is a measure of a computers processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. Exaflop is one quintillion computer operations per second. Simply put, one exaflop is thousand times faster than one petaflop.

The fastest supercomputer in the world, Sequoia, has registered a top computing speed of 16.32 petaflops which is equivalent of computing of power from over 7.8 lakhs high-end laptops put together.

If the Indian government approves building exaflop supercomputers, these will be at least 61 times faster than Sequoia, officials said.

India's top supercomputer at present ranks 58th globally in terms of computing speed. Sibal has cited the past record of Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) which was set up in 1987 by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi after technologically advanced nations denied supply of supercomputer to India in mid-1980s.

"The Minister has written that C-DAC developed first supercomputers in the country, the PARAM series. Presently Param Yuva with 54 teraflop computing power is serving many researchers through Garuda Computing Grid," the official said.

Sibal has proposed that Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) should be given tasks to coordinate overall supercomputing activities in the country as it has been done in the past.

The proposal made in the letter says that DEITY should be given tasks to set up a National Apex Committee to oversee the implementation of the proposed Supercomputing Mission and C- DAC should establish peta and exascale supercomputing facilities and development activities.

Sistema to Acquire Aircel Communications for $3 billion

Russia based largest investment company, Sistema JSFC, is all set to acquire a controlling stake in Aircel Communications for around $3 billion (~Rs. 16,500 crore). It would be one of the largest transactions in the telecom sector since Vodafone bought Hutchison Essar for $11.7 billion in 2007. Malaysia's Maxis Communications owns 74% stake in Aircel that has about 65 million subscribers.

Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) nationally operates its telecom services under the MTS brand that offers mobile services on CDMA technology in India. It lost its license in all the 21 circles in India after the Supreme Court judgement earlier this year.

Aircel's spokesman has denied of such deal, but ET has confirmed it with 2 of their sources, and they expect that the transaction could be announced shortly.

Google updates Chrome for Android brings Strengthens Sandbox

Google has just launched an update to Chrome for Android app, that provides the browser with an improved sandbox. Google says the update v18.0.1025308 will help ensure that malicious mobile sites remain contained and can’t impact the entire browser. 

It's worth noting, though, that this enhanced sandbox will only be available to Android 4.1 Jellybean users. All Chrome for Android users (Chrome is only available for Android 4.0+), though, will profit from the additional security fixes and small feature updates in this release. In total, Google paid out $750 to developers who found security issues.

As Google notes, the Chrome sandbox "is made possible by the innovative multi-process architecture in Chrome for Android, in conjunction with Android’s User ID (UID) isolation technology."

Besides these security fixes, this update also makes a few small changes to how YouTube videos work in Chrome. YouTube video controls, Google says, now work in full-screen mode, and video now automatically continues playing after a screen lock/unlock. Google also says that third-party input methods (think SwiftKey or Swype) will now work better with Chrome.

Apple 4-inch iPhone 5 launched for starting price at $199

Apple on Wednesday launched its much awaited sixth-generation iPhone 5 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The company claims iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world, with an all-new 7.6 mm anodized aluminum body that is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter (weighs 112 grams) than iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, the world's most advanced mobile operating system with over 200 new features including - the all new Maps app with Apple-designed cartography and turn-by-turn navigation, Facebook integration, Passbook organization and even more Siri features and languages.

The iPhone 5 features a 4 inch Retina display and a lot of changes under the hood including a faster A6 chip. The new iPhone also support faster LTE networks but only a few operators will be supporting the device at launch. The device also uses a smaller nano SIM card which means that your existing microSIM card won’t work in the iPhone 5.

The phone sports an 8MP HD rear camera with panorama mode (at 28MP), backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, five element lens, and f/24 aperture.

iPhone 5 supports ultrafast wireless standards including LTE and DC-HSDPA, so you can browse, download and stream content even faster. iPhone 5 features dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support for a wireless experience up to 150 Mbps.

iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate, and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the 64GB model.

iPhone 5 will be available from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com) Apple's retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 5 will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK on Friday, September 21, and customers can pre-order their iPhone 5 beginning Friday, September 14. iPhone 4S will also be available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 4 will be available for free with a two-year contract. iOS 6 software will be available on Wednesday, September 19 as a free software update.

iPhone 5 will roll out worldwide to 22 more countries on September 28, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
