Leaked pictures which are said to be the iPad Mini show the tablet doesn't have a rear camera, lending weight to the idea of a 'budget iPad'.

When more substantial rumours of the 7-inch iPad Mini re-emerged earlier this year there was some suggestion Apple might be aiming to produce a low-cost device to compete with cheaper Android slates.

Part of keeping that cost down might involve using a non-Retina display, but now it seems that a rear-facing camera has also been omitted for the same reason.

Google's popular £159 Nexus 7 also shipped without a rear camera and still managed to sell out in a matter of days.

The late Steve Jobs, Apple's iconic CEO, was famously against the idea of a smaller iPad design, or at least in public. Recently, however, emails revealed in Apple's ongoing legal disputes suggested the company founder may have warmed to the idea around the beginning of last year.

According to the emails, Apple vice president Eddy Cue spoke to Jobs about the concept on several occasions saying he believed 'there will be a seven-inch market,' and, 'we should do one'.

He added that Jobs 'seemed very receptive the last time'.

Little is known about the iPad Mini at this point, but rumours suggest it may have quite a different aesthetic design from its larger cousin, instead taking stylistic influence from the iPod Nano.

It's believed the iPad Mini could launch in September alongside the iPhone 5.
