Apple will fit the new iPhone with a smaller pin port, according to a report on TechCrunch.
The technology website claims to have "independently verified" that Apple's next generation of its smartphone will have a 19-pin port rather than the current 30-pin.
The new port is said to be similar in size to the Thunderbolt port already available on many MacBook products, although TechCrunch notes that it won't be exactly the same.
A smaller pin port would mark a significant change in strategy for Apple, after it introduced the 30-pin port as standard with the third generation of the iPod.
The larger port offers stability when docked, but Apple is thought to now be more concerned about maximising space inside its flagship iPhone device, particularly as it faces increasing competition in the smartphone market.
Samsung recently launched its Galaxy S3 smartphone, generating millions of sales, while a new generation of phones running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 is expected to launch in the autumn.
TechCrunch said that three independent manufacturers have confirmed that the 19-pin dock is in the works at Apple.
However, this means that accessory manufacturers will face a nervous few months as they wait for official news on the make up of the next iPhone model.
The new iPhone is expected to be announced by Apple in the autumn, launching alongside its latest iOS 6 mobile operating system.
