Facebook Bug - Likes Count Increasing Automatically without User Clicks

Facebook Likes
Facebook 'likes' are automatically being added to web pages even if a user has not clicked a like button, or even visited the page in question, it has been revealed.

A security researcher site found that simply sending a web address to a friend using Facebook's private messaging function would add two likes to that page.

The site said that leaving a comment on a story within Facebook also adds to the tally, the BBC reports.

"Many websites that use Facebook's 'like' or 'recommend' buttons also carry a counter next to them. This counter reflects the number of times people have clicked those buttons and also the number of times people have shared that page's link on Facebook, the site explained.

"When the count is increased via page shares, no user information is exchanged. We did recently find a bug with our social plug-ins where at times the count for the Share or Like goes up by two, and we are working on fix to solve the issue now," it added.

Government ordered to block Facebook, YouTube Social Sites in Kashmir

Government ordered to block Facebook, YouTube Social Sites in Kashmir
Internet users in Kashmir are unable to access Facebook and YouTube. The government had issued orders to Internet service providers to restrict access to the websites. This move is believed to be in response to the protests against the anti-Islam video on YouTube.

It was previously reported that the certain URLs with offensive content had been blocked, but it now seems that access to the entire websites have been restricted. Last month the Government of Jammu & Kashmir had directed service providers to ensure that the controversial YouTube video was not accessible from the state.

The order was issued by the state Home Department, invoking the powers conferred under section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885.

"In the interest of public safety and for maintaining public order, the government directed all licensed Telecom Service Providers and Internet Service Providers to make arrangements to ensure that their subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir should not be able to download or upload the contents" with regard to the video, the order said.

The order also emphasised that if necessary entire domains could also be blocked by service providers. "If necessary, due to technical reasons, the Fully Qualified Domain Names shall be blocked viz www.youtube.com, www.facebook.com etc," the order read.

Greater Kashmir quoted executives from telecom service providers in the state who confirmed that there was indeed a block in place, but when Greater Kashmir contacted Aga Ruhullah, Jammu & Kashmir's minister for information technology, he claimed ignorance. "There is not any ban on these websites. I don't have proper information of it. I can't confirm whether there is any technical snag in it," Ruhullah said.

Meanwhile, the Government of India has asked private telecom operators in Jammu and Kashmir to provide at the earliest a mechanism for fool-proof monitoring of real-time Internet traffic in the state.

Facebook launches service to send real-life gifts to Friends

Facebook launches service to send real-life gifts to Friends
Facebook is rolling out a service called Gifts which, as its name suggests, lets users send chocolate, coffee, socks and other real-life presents to one another.
Facebook Gifts launched Thursday to a subset of users in the U.S. and will roll out to more over the coming months as people begin to send gifts to each other.

Users will be able to click on a "gifts" icon on their Facebook friends' pages on Facebook's website or on Android mobile phones. (iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon.)

The icon will also show up on the right side of users' Facebook pages with the notifications for friends' birthdays, weddings and other life events. For example, if your friend's birthday is coming up in two days, you'll now see a "give her a gift" link and the gift icon next to her name and photo.

Clicking the icon will display presents you can buy, such as a Starbucks gift card, cupcakes or a teddy bear.

The recipient will be notified through Facebook to enter a shipping address for the presents. In some cases, they'll be able to select their own cupcake flavors or size and style of socks. They can also exchange gifts for other items if they don't like chocolate or don't wear socks.

The move represents Facebook Inc.'s first real foray into e-commerce. The company will take an unspecified cut from each item sold. On Thursday, possible gifts included gourmet ice cream, Andy Warhol prints, flowers, organic dog toys and spa packages.

Facebook Gifts is the result of Facebook's acquisition of Karma, a 16-person startup based in San Francisco. Facebook bought the company on May 18, the day of its rocky initial public offering. Karma's mobile app let people send gifts to their friends on the go. Facebook Gifts, of course, works both on computers and mobile devices.

Lee Linden, the former head of Karma, is now head product manager for Facebook Gifts, which he says incorporates "the heart and soul of the Karma experience."

"We think gifting is a form of communication," he said.

FarmVille 2 available on Facebook and Zynga Online in 3D

FarmVille 2 available on Facebook and Zynga Online in 3D
Zynga announced the global launch of FarmVille 2 Wednesday, the next generation of the company's popular Facebook-farming game.

"FarmVille 2 offers players a new way to farm by delivering an immersive experience, rich characters, and new social features that make game boards come to life with their friends," said Tim LeTourneau, vice president of games at Zynga.

Zynga's first game to be built entirely in 3D, the game lets players not only grow and harvest crops but also use those crops to do things like feed chickens on their farm or bake treats they can then take to market and sell.

With FarmVille 2 Zynga has also made it easier to plant and harvest crops. Now rather than clicking multiple times on each square of a crop in order to plant and harvest, you can instead drag your mouse over a large area and plant or harvest over that entire space at once.

The game also includes a number of decorations you can interact with, ranging from a wind chime that actually plays to a rocking chair you can move back and forth.

Zynga hopes that all that will be enough to have new players come to the game, and for FarmVille enthusiasts to build a whole new farm in FarmVille 2 while continuing to maintain their farm in the original version of the game. Zynga plans to continue to support the original FarmVille, and keep adding expansions and new features to the original game to keep people interested.

"We can't wait to see the farms that players create. We also want dedicated players of FarmVille to know that we remain fully committed to bringing them new reasons to play the original game they love," says LeTourneau.

FarmVille 2 is live now on Facebook.

Get Best Deals on Brands You 'Like' in Facebook, Using 'Facial Recognition Camera'

Facebook Like
Now, a new app is being developed that can check in people on Facebook and send them the best deals and offers using facial recognition cameras, a report has said.

The new app called Facedeals will be installed at various shops' and bars' front doors to scan people's faces as they enter.

In order to use this feature the customers must authenticate the app on Facebook when they walk into any store, which has installed Facedeal facial recognition camera.

Once the facial recognition is complete the users receive notifications on their smart phones regarding the deals being offered on their favorite brands, which they have liked on Facebook.

According to the Herald Sun, the new app could draw criticism over concerns that it might violate people's privacy.

Facebook has already been criticized for using facial recognition technology as a way of offering its users recommendations on people to be friends with.

Last month Facebook discontinued the service only a month after acquiring the technology after being bombarded with complaints regarding privacy.

Facebook Gambling App Evokes Public Outcry

Facebook Gambling App Evokes Public Outcry
The first Facebook app to allow players to gamble with real money has provoked an outcry from Christian groups, the Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Bingo Friendzy, developed by the British online gambling company Gamesys, was introduced on Facebook Tuesday. It allows players to stake cash in 90 bingo and slot machine games.

The app is marketed with cartoon graphics featuring characters that have been compared to those on Moshi Monsters, the popular children's social network.

It has evoked anger from Christian groups, who called on the Advertising Standards Authority to act, according to the newspaper.

"Gambling is age-restricted for a reason: children are excluded because they are vulnerable," said Toby Scott, director of communications for the Methodist Church. His concerns were echoed by the Mother's Union, a Christian charity.

"With the appealing fluffy animal imagery, the site is clearly designed to appeal to a young audience," a spokesman said.

Facebook said Bingo Friendzy players would be subject to "strict account acceptance controls verifying their identity, and that they are over 18 and located in the UK".

Facebook Has More Than 83 Million 'Fake' Users

Facebook Has More Than 83 million 'Fake' Users
Facebook has revealed that it believes there are now more than 83 million fake users on the social network.

In company filings published this week, it said 8.7% of its 955 million active users might not be real.

Duplicate profiles made up 4.8% of the fakes, user-misclassified accounts amounted to 2.4%, and 1.5% of users were described as "undesirable".

The estimate came at a time of growing concern about the value of marketing on the platform.

In total, the company said it estimated there were 83.09 million fake users, which it classified in three groups.

The largest group of "fakes" were duplicates, which the company defined as "an account that a user maintains in addition to his or her principal account."

Others were described as "user-misclassified" where, Facebook explained "users have created personal profiles for a business, organisation, or non-human entity such as a pet".

Finally, "undesirable" accounts were profiles deemed to be in breach of Facebook's terms of service. Typically, this means profiles which have been used for sending out spam messages or other content.

Facebook Acquires Acrylic Software – Developer of Mac & iOS Apps

Facebook Acquires Acrylic Software – Developer of Mac & iOS Apps
Few days back Facebook acquires mobile gadget focused spool team and still they continuing with its acquisitions.
Now Facebook has just bought Mac and iOS apps Vancouver-based developer, Acrylic Software.

The small firm Acrylic is known for the RSS reader app Pulp (a personalized newspaper) for Mac and iPad and the secure database app Wallet (for securely storing passwords, credit-card numbers, etc.) for iOS and Mac.

The company has decided to cease development of the two apps, which Facebook itself has not acquired. This means that the apps will continue to be available for download and purchase, but will no longer be updated. Acrylic has two employees and both are moving to work on the social-networking giant's design team in San Francisco.

Facebook Acquires Mobile Gadget Focused Spool Team

Facebook Acquires Mobile Gadget Focused Spool Team

Facebook added more mobile technology to its arsenal with the acquisition of Spool, a startup specializing in bookmarking and sharing content on smartphones or tablets.

Spool makes free Google Android and Apple iOS apps for smartphones and tablets that let users save Internet articles and video that is viewable online or off, kind of like a DVR for the Internet. Spool said that those apps will be shut down.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Facebook said, "The Spool team has deep expertise in mobile software development and a passion for making content easy to consume. We’re excited for the team to join and accelerate their vision at Facebook."

Facebook, which has its headquarters in the California city of Menlo Park, has made a priority of improving its mobile offerings to keep in synch with users who are increasingly accessing the service from smartphones or tablets.

Lack of a clear strategy for making money from users who connect to the social network with mobile devices was considered to be among the reasons Facebook stock sank below its debut price of $38 per share in May of this year.

Facebook shares were trading at slightly less than $30 on the Nasdaq in New York.

Facebook App to Protect Privacy and Curb Criminals

Facebook App
Social Privacy Protector (SPP) is the Facebook security app developed by students of Ben Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev.

Michael Fire, a Ph.D. candidate in BGU's Department of Information Systems Engineering, says, "An important feature of our app is the ability for parents to better protect their kids' privacy with just one click instead of having to navigate the more complicated Facebook privacy settings".

Features of this SPP app -
  • It allows parents to adjust the profiles of their kids.
  • It prevents criminals from gathering personal information.
  • This app can bring multiple levels of protection to people's FB profile.
  • SPP notifies the user about the applications installed on their profile that could threaten their privacy.
  • It also has a special feature that reviews user's friend list to identify those who might be fake profiles.
How does SPP app work -
  • This app analyzes and provides a score to every friend according to his or her connectedness.
  • Friends having lowest scores are considered suspicious and then the user is asked if that friend should be restricted from his/her personal information.
  • Though it does not block a person, it restricts them from using your personal information.
This software is free and is available as a Facebook app for all browsers.

Facebook May Launches Job Posting Service Soon

Facebook Job Posting Service
HOUSTON: Soon the popular social networking site Facebook will become a recruiter, as per knowledgeable sources, by launching its own job board after teaming with existing job-posting companies, the sources said.

Citing anonymous sources, media reports said that BranchOut, Jobvite and Work4Labs will be at least three of the companies that will pair with the platform.

With the rise of LinkedIn -- and its aggressive moves into social-networking functionality -- having Facebook enter the fray is an obvious play for them.

Whether or not the job posts will display in the news feed is unclear.

Many bigger companies have career recruitment presence on Facebook already, but a centralised engine behind job postings and searches would feed the engagement metrics.

According to recent estimates, the job-posting market is worth about $4.3 billion and everyone would like to have a piece of it.

Last October, the social networking site initiated its move towards becoming a source for job hunters by teaming up with the US Department of Labor and three employment-related agencies in an attempt to decrease the country's 9.1 per cent unemployment rate using social media -- a project that may eventually include a Facebook job posting system.

This partnership started a new era of formal job hunting content on Facebook -- which some recruiters already prefer over LinkedIn -- for the first time.

As part of the initiative, Facebook launched a "Social Jobs" portal that makes easily accessible educational content and tools from its partners at the Department of Labor, National Association of Colleges and Employers, Direct Employers Association, and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.

It plans to promote this page in the 10 states with the highest unemployment rates and Puerto Rico.

The most interesting aspect of the new partnership, however, is a plan to inch Facebook into job listings territory.

Facebook's statement announcing the partnership mentioned "systems where new job postings can be delivered virally through the Facebook site at no charge."

What shape such a job posting system would take, and whether Facebook has any solid plans beyond research to pursue one, are still not clear.

A job board that lives on Facebook could put the social network in direct competition with sites like LinkedIn and Monster.com.
